From now on it will bear the name \u201cStefan-Kamins-Stra\u00dfe\u201d \u2013 thereby permanently honoring a soldier from the ranks of the Bundeswehr who lost his life on duty in Afghanistan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the ceremonial unveiling of the new street sign, alongside numerous guests from the Bundeswehr, politics and society, the parents of Stefan Kamins and other relatives were also in attendance. For the family, the ceremony was a particularly emotional moment. More than two decades after his death in 2003, the memory of the fallen soldier remains alive \u2013 now also visible in the cityscape of Euskirchen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48932\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48932\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><noscript><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48932\" src=\"https:\/\/draftidf.co.il\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Euskirchen-Renames-Barracks-Access-Road-After-Fallen-Soldier.jpg\" alt=\"Euskirchens B\u00fcrgermeister Sacha Reichelt bei seiner Ansprache zur Umbenennung der Stra\u00dfe.\" width=\"696\" height=\"464\" title=\"Euskirchen benennt Kasernenzufahrt nach gefallenem Soldaten 2\"   data-eio=\"l\"><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<p>B\u00fcrgermeister Sacha Reichelt und die Standort\u00e4lteste, Flottillenadmiral Sabine Reppin, w\u00fcrdigten in ihren Ansprachen sowohl das Schicksal von Stefan Kamins als auch den Dienst aller Veteraninnen und Veteranen der Bundeswehr. Die Stra\u00dfenumbenennung sei weit mehr als eine symbolische Geste. Sie stehe f\u00fcr Dankbarkeit, Respekt und die Verantwortung, die Leistungen und Opfer von Soldatinnen und Soldaten nicht in Vergessenheit geraten zu lassen und ist im \u00dcbrigen ein sehr seltener und herauszuhebender Vorgang, wie B\u00fcrgermeister Reichelt betonte, den er in seiner Amtszeit zum ersten Mal durchf\u00fchren durfte.<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Story of Stefan Kamins<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Stefan Kamins war Stabsgefreiter der Bundeswehr und am Standort Euskirchen stationiert. Im Jahr 2003 wurde der damals 28-J\u00e4hrige nach Afghanistan entsandt. Dort beteiligte sich die Bundeswehr im Rahmen des internationalen Einsatzes ISAF an der Stabilisierung des Landes. Am 21. Juni 2003 ereignete sich nahe der afghanischen Hauptstadt Kabul der Anschlag. Kamins war gemeinsam mit Kameraden in einem ungepanzerten Gel\u00e4ndewagen vom Typ \u201eWolf\u201c unterwegs, als das Fahrzeug auf eine Mine fuhr und diese zur Detonation brachte. Stefan Kamins starb noch vor Ort, ein weiterer Soldat wurde verletzt.<\/p>\n<p>Mit seinem Tod schrieb sich sein Name in ein besonders schmerzhaftes Kapitel der Bundeswehrgeschichte ein. Kamins gilt als erster deutscher Soldat, der w\u00e4hrend des Afghanistan-Einsatzes durch feindliche Einwirkung fiel. Sein Schicksal steht zugleich stellvertretend f\u00fcr viele Frauen und M\u00e4nner der Bundeswehr, die in Auslandseins\u00e4tzen verwundet wurden oder ihr Leben verloren. Der Einsatz dieser gefallenen Bundeswehrsoldaten f\u00fcr Freiheit, Demokratie und Sicherheit sollte niemals vergessen werden.<\/p>\n<p>Die Benennung einer Stra\u00dfe nach Stefan Kamins greift genau diesen Gedanken auf: Sie schafft einen dauerhaften Erinnerungsort und macht sein Schicksal auch f\u00fcr kommende Generationen sichtbar. Dass ausgerechnet die Zufahrt zur Mercator-Kaserne nun seinen Namen tr\u00e4gt, besitzt dabei eine besondere Symbolkraft. Tag f\u00fcr Tag werden Soldatinnen und Soldaten, zivile Besch\u00e4ftigte sowie Besucher den Namen Stefan Kamins lesen und sich daran erinnern k\u00f6nnen, welchen Preis der Dienst f\u00fcr das eigene Land unter Umst\u00e4nden fordert. Memorial events around this day are numerous also this week. The highlight is the central festive ceremony on this June 21 at the Reichstag building in Berlin. In April 2024, the Members of the German Bundestag with a large majority decided to introduce National Veterans Day on June 15 as a day of remembrance in Germany. The focus around this day is the recognition and appreciation of veterans.<\/p>\n<p>Actors from politics and administration (federal, state, cities and municipalities) are, alongside the federal government and the German Bundestag, actively involved in the implementation of National Veterans Day.
