Since there is no radio link between operator and drone, traditional electronic warfare means cannot disrupt this special control link. The Israeli company Axon Vision has developed for this problem the Counter-UAS system ForceField, which visually detects fiber-optic drones, tracks them with the help of artificial intelligence, and thereby enables their kinetic countermeasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Israeli Development Against Fiber-Optic Drones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While traditional drones receive their commands by radio, others remain connected to their operator during flight via a trailing fiber-optic line. In Ukraine near the front, one now frequently sees these fiber-optic lines, resembling spider webs, over houses, trees and streets from earlier Russian drone attacks.<\/p>\n<p>What at first sounds more impractical than radio control actually has advantages in a military context, as it eliminates one of the key attack points of conventional electronic drone defense. A radio link between drone and operator, which could be jammed or manipulated, does not exist. Nor can GNSS-independent control be easily prevented by interference with satellite navigation.<\/p>\n<p>This is where Axon Vision&#8217;s ForceField comes into play, which detects such targets by a different approach and counters them.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Electro-Optical Sensors Instead of Radio Signals<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ForceField uses passive electro-optical sensing. This allows the system to detect aerial targets without relying on their radio or other electronic emissions.<\/p>\n<p>According to Axon Vision, the system detects drones in real time, then identifies and tracks them. This leads to support in countering the fiber-optic drone. The processing of sensor data is done directly in the system using so-called edge AI. The AI evaluation is thus not necessarily dependent on a permanent connection to external computing or command structures. This makes ForceField particularly interesting for protecting mobile forces, military vehicles and tactical positions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>AI Connects Reconnaissance and Countermeasures<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Axon Vision describes the process with three steps: Detect, Understand, Respond. In doing so, ForceField is intended to bring the previously distributed kill chain, often spread across multiple systems, into a compact solution.<\/p>\n<p>After electro-optical detection the AI handles the analysis of the sensor data and assists in assessing the identified threat. Subsequently, the kinetic countermeasures against the target can be carried out. The company refers to this as a man-on-the-loop approach. The AI thus assumes extensive functions in detection, tracking and decision-support, while a human operator supervises the automated process and could intervene.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company, ForceField can also be integrated with existing military platforms and use conventional weapons and munitions for countering.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Successful Live-Fire Tests Against FPV Drones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Axon Vision recently demonstrated the described ForceField capabilities in live-fire tests under realistic conditions. This included FPV drones as well as other low-flying aerial targets being intercepted. According to the company, this demonstrated the entire chain of action\u2014from detection to identification and tracking to countermeasures.<\/p>\n<p>According to Axon Vision, the system does not require a permanent communications link or necessarily external sensors. This largely autonomous mode of operation is intended to enable deployment directly with tactical forces.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fiber-Optic Drones Are Changing Drone Defense<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The development of such systems is gaining importance due to the increasing use of fiber-optic controlled FPV drones. Existing drone defense methods often rely on disrupting either the control link between operator and drone or their satellite navigation. For a drone controlled directly via fiber optics, however, these methods do not apply. The drone must therefore be detected with other sensors and subsequently physically countered.<\/p>\n<p>ForceField addresses precisely this gap: passive electro-optical sensors undertake the search for the target, AI assists in identifying and tracking it, and a kinetic component ultimately carries out the countermeasure.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First Order for ForceField<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Axon Vision has now received a first order for ForceField. The client, according to the company, is an Israeli defense organization that was not further specified. The contract is initially valued at around six million Israeli shekels. There are options worth up to an additional nine million shekels, which could raise the total volume to around 15 million shekels (about \u20ac4.25 million). Delivery of the ordered systems is expected within the next twelve months.<\/p>\n<p>For Axon Vision, the order marks the transition from development and testing to the first introduction of the system with a military customer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The receipt of this first contract shortly after the market introduction of ForceField is a significant milestone for us and reflects our transition from development and validation in live-fire tests to the first commercial deployment by defense organizations,&#8221; says Neri Zin, CEO of Axon Vision. &#8220;We are seeing growing demand for solutions that combine AI and autonomy to meet the evolving drone threat, and we are opening up further opportunities with customers and strategic partners in Israel and on international markets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Given the growing prevalence of fiber-optic drones, the ability to have another countermeasure alongside traditional electronic warfare is likely to be particularly interesting.
