In the southern Ukrainian oblast of Zaporizhzhia, where Russian troops east of the former Kakhovka Reservoir have had to retreat somewhat since the start of the year, they were able, according to their own statements, to regain ground at the beginning of September and, in particular, to advance on the city of Orikhiv from several directions.<\/p>\n<p>In Kharkiv Oblast, they managed to encircle enemy troops largely in an area of about 250 square kilometers in the tip of Ukrainian territory north of Veliky Burluk. However, the southern part of the pocket is formed by sections of the &#8220;gray zone&#8221;, where fighting is conducted mainly with drones and neither side has clear ground control. This situation seems not to have changed in the last two weeks, as with Orikhiv.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50268\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><noscript><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-50268\" src=\"https:\/\/draftidf.co.il\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Ukraine-War-Russia-Gains-on-the-Flanks-Ukraine-in-the.jpg\" alt=\"Lage im Ukrainekrieg am 06.10.2026 um 19:00 MESZ.\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" title=\"Ukrainekrieg: Russland gewinnt an Flanken, Ukraine im Osten 1\"   data-eio=\"l\"><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Exact Frontline Progress in the Ukraine War Still Largely Unclear<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Russia suffered setbacks in Donetsk Oblast in the area of the cities Kramatorsk, Sloviansk and Lyman. After Ukraine here initially managed to regain ground only in the middle section around Sloviansk, this subsequently affected areas to the north and south of it. The latest reports from yesterday Tuesday showed further Ukrainian gains near Lyman, while from the Russian side in the last week there had been no reports from the Kramatorsk-Sloviansk area,<\/p>\n<p>As before, the exact front line remains unclear in many places due to the increasingly unmanned warfare. This applies, for example, to the long-contested fortress city of Kostyantynivka south of Kramatorsk, whose complete capture Russia had already claimed weeks ago, while Ukrainian reports continue to describe it as one of several areas between opposing envelopment assaults. The control of several terrain sections along the border between the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts also remains unclear.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Drone Attacks on Ships in the Black Sea<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At the strategic level, both sides continue their missile and drone attacks against targets inland, with Kyiv in particular recently again showing the exhaustion of Ukrainian stocks of Patriot surface-to-air missiles and other air-defense weapons.<\/p>\n<p>There were also attacks on shipping in the Black Sea. On Tuesday, air and sea drones struck two merchant ships for the first time in the Bulgarian Exclusive Economic Zone, one of which sank. The crew is still missing.<\/p>\n<p>Already on Monday, a Turkish vessel sank after a similar attack, with two crew members killed.
