The unmanned system combines stabilized machine gun armament with electro-optical reconnaissance and can, according to the manufacturer, stay airborne for up to three hours. It is intended to provide tactical forces with their own air-delivered capability for surveillance, target identification and immediate fire support.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of reconnaissance and weapon effects on a single unmanned platform is at the center of the collaboration between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the weapons maker SIG SAUER. With FIRE STORM 250, the two companies have now tested a system that can from the air not only identify and track targets but also engage them immediately with a machine gun.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike conventional reconnaissance drones, which must first relay their observation data to other weapon systems, the sensing and weaponry on FIRE STORM 250 are integrated on the same platform. This shortens the time between target detection and engagement, and reduces the risk to lines of communications.<\/p>\n<p>Among the potential use cases for the new armed drone, the manufacturers list, among other things, immediate close air support (CAS), the securing of borders and strategic facilities, the protection of own forces, and fire support in military operations.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Machine gun with 200 rounds of ammunition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>FIRE STORM 250 carries a remotely operated weapons station MICROLIGHT from SIG SAUER, equipped with a M250 machine gun from the same manufacturer. The M250 is a belt-fed machine gun. The complete, ready-to-operate weapons system including the weapons station, machine gun and 200 rounds of ammunition is said to weigh only 53 pounds, about 24 kilograms. SIG SAUER even describes MICROLIGHT as the world&#8217;s lightest airborne remote weapons station.<\/p>\n<p>The weapons system is stabilized to enable precise target engagement from the flying platform. The data from the onboard sensors are fused with the fire-control information and presented to the operator as a single target picture. This allows the operator to observe the surroundings, track targets and, when needed, engage immediately with the integrated weaponry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFIRE STORM 250 combines some of the world&#8217;s most advanced technologies, including IAI&#8217;s drone platform and SIG SAUER&#8217;s MICROLIGHT weapons station with the M250 machine gun, thus enabling a new level of operational flexibility,\u201d said Sali Okanin, SIG SAUER&#8217;s Israel General Manager. \u201cWe are proud of the new SIG SAUER M250, which is based on battle-tested technology. It is a belt-fed weapon with greater range than older systems and weight savings that not only benefit the unit level but also enable deployment on drones.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>FIRE STORM 250 in firing test<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During the now-completed trials, FIRE STORM 250 hovered over a simulated battlefield and identified targets using its onboard camera. The system then engaged the identified targets with both single shots and in semi-automatic firing mode. The firing tests were conducted from varying distances and altitudes.<\/p>\n<p>With this test setup, the companies aimed in particular to demonstrate the functionality of the integrated sensor and weapons system, as well as its precision and safety under different deployment conditions. The manufacturers did not disclose specifics on firing distances, flight altitudes, hit patterns, or the dispersion of the weapon system.<\/p>\n<p>The successful testing demonstrates, according to IAI, that airborne surveillance, target identification and precise fire support can be combined on a single tactical drone platform. &#8220;The future of the battlefield will be determined not only by the power of weapon systems, but also by the ability to fuse reconnaissance, technology and operational capabilities into a single precise and effective solution,&#8221; said Guy Bar Lev, CEO of IAI. &#8220;The successful test demonstrates our vision of developing integrated solutions that give the forces in the field an operational edge, expand their capabilities and enable them to meet the evolving challenges of the modern battlefield.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration with SIG SAUER also underlines the importance of strategic partnerships with internationally leading companies to bring together complementary capabilities and bring innovative solutions to market.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Three hours of flight time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>FIRE STORM 250 is designed as a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle. This means the drone does not require a runway or special flight infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Propulsion is provided by an internal combustion engine that can run on different fuels. According to IAI, the drone can be refueled in the field with common operating fluids. Compared to purely battery-electric drones, this is intended to avoid longer charging times and accelerate readiness for operations after a landing.<\/p>\n<p>The maximum flight time is stated by IAI to be up to three hours. The system is meant to achieve this endurance even with a 200-round weapon system installed. This makes FIRE STORM 250 suitable for longer surveillance and security tasks, for example accompanying moving formations, observing marching routes, or protecting troops during an operation. The drone should also be deployable with comparatively low personnel and support requirements, enabling tactical units to accompany it directly.<\/p>\n<p>The operator receives in real time the camera images, target-tracking data and possible engagement options. \u201cThe next generation of unmanned systems will be defined not only by autonomy but by how effectively they merge sensing, decision-making and action within the operating environment,\u201d said Moshe Levy, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Military Aircraft Group of IAI. \u201cFIRE STORM 250 brings these capabilities into a single operational loop. This allows tactical forces to extend their reach and maintain a continuous situational picture while keeping human control over engagement decisions.\u201d The live-fire testing demonstrates the potential of this approach under realistic deployment conditions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Aerial fire support for tactical forces<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Thus, FIRE STORM 250 is particularly suitable as a supplement to the capabilities of smaller tactical units. They would thereby be able to obtain reconnaissance and fire support from the air without having to rely on manned aircraft or larger unmanned systems. Additional roles could include direct fire support as well as the continuous surveillance of operations rooms, securing movement corridors, protecting military facilities and supporting special forces.<\/p>\n<p>Several FIRE-STORM-250 systems could be deployed simultaneously to enable continuous monitoring day and night. Individual drones could, for example, take on forward reconnaissance tasks while others support the protection of a unit. With the combination of longer flight time, VTOL capability and a stabilized machine gun, IAI and SIG SAUER are pursuing an approach in which tactical forces not only have their own airborne sensors but also an immediately available means of impact.<\/p>\n<p>The firing trials completed so far have demonstrated the basic functionality of this concept.
