At the Defence TechDay, the company demonstrated last week in Erding what possibilities the new design offers compared to the old PARM. The special thing about NextGen is: the mine can be activated, secured, and re-armed remotely. In addition, several systems can be networked and controlled together. This turns the classic anti-tank guided mine into a remotely operated effector that can be integrated into higher-level command and effect systems.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Upgrade of the anti-tank guided mine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The PARM NextGen was first presented at Eurosatory 2024 in Paris. The new generation builds on the proven DM22 anti-tank guided mine, which has been in Bundeswehr stocks for decades and has proven itself in Ukraine. Due to the long period of peace, production had been discontinued at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The resumption of production used by TDW for the upgrade. In doing so, the company did not simply develop a modernized version of the mine; rather, the PARM NextGen is intended to expand the possibilities of anti-armor at the tactical level and, in the future, form a product family together with the DM22.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>PARM DM22 as a starting point<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The current PARM DM22 is a comparatively simple but effective anti-armor weapon. Put simply, it&#8217;s a sensor-controlled anti-tank launcher on a tripod, which is deployed, for example, along roads, chokepoints, or strips of terrain. The triggering is done via a fiber optic line laid perpendicular to the expected travel direction of an enemy vehicle. If the vehicle runs over the line and deforms or damages it, the mine is triggered and fires a shaped charge. This hits the vehicle from the side and can penetrate its armor.<\/p>\n<p>The DM22 weighs 9.6 kilograms, is 657 millimeters long, and has a diameter of 128 millimeters. Its combat range is up to 40 meters. An electronic arming timer disables the mine after at most 40 days. Until then, it can be secured and unsecured multiple times. It is thus particularly suitable for blocking transport routes and terrain strips. However, its tactical flexibility is limited because it does not have an integrated remote control and networking. For that reason, it was cheap and mass producible.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>PARM NextGen expands tactical possibilities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Precisely at these points, the PARM NextGen builds on. The new generation features an integrated radio connection, through which it can be activated, secured, and re-activated from a distance, without the fiber-optic line of the previous generation. This allows the effectiveness of a prepared lockdown to be adapted to the respective combat situation and enables the user to install the mine on a robot, thus keeping a blockade mobile.<\/p>\n<p>The radio link is designed to have as low detectability as possible. According to the manufacturer, the mine only communicates on demand. The data transmission is encrypted with AES-128, with each system having its own unique key. This is intended to increase the security of the communications and limit the impact of potential interference attempts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>New sensing with a proven warhead<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>TDW has also advanced the targeting system. The PARM NextGen combines several sensors, whose central component is a passive infrared system. The sensors are intended to reliably detect enemy vehicles and to achieve a cost-effective hit effect. The warhead, however, remains unchanged according to TDW. The company continues to rely on the proven shaped charge of the previous PARM. It should retain high effectiveness even against modern armored vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The Mobility Kill is particularly central. This refers to damaging a vehicle so that it loses its mobility. A full Mission Kill, i.e., disabling the entire operational capability of the enemy vehicle, depends on factors such as the impact angle and distance and, according to the manufacturer, cannot be guaranteed as a rule. It is also not necessary, since an immobilized vehicle is only a limited threat for the time being and can be fought off more easily with additional means of effect.<\/p>\n<p>The PARM NextGen is thus mainly a system to prevent, hinder, or steer enemy movements into certain spaces. The combination of modern sensors, remote controllability, and networking substantially expands its deployment options compared to the previous DM22.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Robot ODIN.75<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The version of PARM NextGen shown at the Defence TechDay was mounted on a Nexos Defence robot, the ODIN.75. This smallest robot in the ODIN family can carry a payload of up to 17.5 kg. But of course the PARM could also be integrated on many other platforms. &#8220;With a kit, the user can do this themselves&#8221; was assured by S&#038;T at the Defence TechDay. After all, the principle of the original anti-tank guided mine should be preserved: effective, yet easier to assemble and thus suitable for mass production.
