According to the manufacturer, the system functions especially well in rooms where GPS signal is not available or is disrupted. With this, Asio aims to give the user full control over ground-based command authority.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-50545 size-full" src="https://draftidf.co.il/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Tactical-Augmented-Reality-Monocular-for-Infantry-Forces.jpg" alt="Asio Lynx als handgehaltenes Targetingsystem mit rund 600 Gramm Gewicht. Lynx is a handheld sensor that is light and optimized for highly mobile and mounted forces. And it is above all a fused, handheld targeting system. Smaller and lighter than many of the devices currently in use, which often require a tripod. Lynx is already in use with the IDF and other combat units.

Asio: “On the battlefield, operators must recognize, identify and act faster than the enemy – often with restricted visibility and under extreme time pressure. The gap between sensor data and immediate reaction can determine the outcome of the engagement.” The sensor-to-shooter cycle is to be closed and, above all, accelerated.

Because of its deployment with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), there is now a series of new insights and, above all, validations of the systems and the overall concept.

The Asio system consists of four pillars. First, the own C2 system. This is simple and lean, in contrast to widely used C4ISR systems. The foundation is rapid introduction and implementation into the troops. It requires only a single briefing, no long training. This is particularly important for forces that rely on quick enlargement through reserves, or a militia system. In Israel, but basically also across the entire NATO, rapid growth via the reserve system is planned. The system is intended for the tactical level up to a maximum battalion. Based on experiences in Gaza and the deployment of reserves, it has now been revised and simplified again, according to the company.

The second pillar is the complete situational picture. Where are my targets? How can I quickly and simply supply my troops and their assets with a target designation? For this, the target designation must be simple and intuitive. And the linking of other units and allies must be possible – i.e., joint and combined. Without heavy integration and explanations. Therefore the system relies on a simple, common language that everyone understands. The information and indicators are delivered via Augmented Reality (AR) and arrows.

The third pillar is reconnaissance/ISR across all kinds of drones. GPS-independent.

And the last pillar is the possibility of autonomous engagement, i.e., the strike element. also called NEEDLE.

The approach of this system has been in use since 2019, now the 2nd generation is being introduced. The battalions become more flexible, more effective, more independent, autonomous, self-sufficient, faster and, in parts, more cost-efficient, according to Asio.

Lynx enables a CAT I target acquisition, with highly precise target generation and distance measurement through freehand capture with immediate display of networked targets. The system ensures immediate force synchronization & Friend-Foe Recognition (IFF) thanks to clear visualization of own and enemy units to support coordination and reduce the risk of friendly fire.

Lynx is a fused sensor, with internal sensors providing precise orientation and target data, which are exchanged seamlessly between connected units. For transmission, the device offers Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity to smart devices. Thanks to visual transmission – via a generated QR code – all data can be transmitted between smart devices even without any emission. To do this, users basically need to stand side by side. Data transfer via hardware (USB stick, etc.) is also possible.

Lynx delivers critical operational data directly into the operator’s field of view and fuses geodata and real-time imagery to support rapid target acquisition and coordinated battlefield actions. This provides a tactical advantage through direct line‑of‑sight. When data are transmitted, the user is guided intuitively and quickly toward the target or the relevant marker via arrow indicators. Especially in urban environments and in darkness, an advantage where orientation can otherwise be lost quickly. Targets are displayed in 360° mode; if a real target is obscured—by buildings, hills, etc.—it is shown blurred in the monocular. The user still knows exactly where it is and whether he can engage it with direct fire or other means.

Asio offers two variants of Lynx, the Lynx TA (Tactical) and the Lynx FS (Fire Support). Both use the same IR and CMOS sensors, only the Horizontal Field of View (HFOV) is 24° on the Tactical, twice as large as the FS’s 12°. And the FS device offers a laser rangefinder up to 2,500 meters, the TA only up to 1,000 meters. The OLED display on the FS is 1,280×1,024, while on the TA it is only 800×600. The FS, however, weighs about 680 grams, roughly 80 grams more than the TA.

Also the functionalities of Lynx have been adjusted. A VR layer has been added, with Points of Interest, targets, etc., and it is fused with the day and night vision of Lynx. This should also contribute to simple and rapid 360° orientation. Including a very high accuracy.

In the future, the system is planned to integrate additional sensors, including SmartShooter, Counter-UAV systems, including an alarm function when a drone is detected.

AUSA: Mission Management Systems ORION

In combination with ORION and other mission management systems, Lynx extends command and control to the operator’s line of sight, without replacing existing architectures.

Lynx offers:

Georeferenced AR overlays

Common operational language

Lower cognitive load

Faster reaction cycles

Edge-optimized architecture

ORION is essentially a hybrid solution that connects tactical communication, the Battle Management System (BMS) and Intel directly on the battlefield in a simple and rapid manner.

New is the ability to retrieve 3D maps on the handheld. Including the operator’s own line of sight, “safe” zones (green), danger points and zones (red), as well as undefined zones (orange) where the enemy could operate from elevated positions or undefined areas.

These 3D maps can also be generated directly on the battlefield if needed. The basis can be the footage from a drone, for example.

These are generated on a laptop with TAURUS Tactical Battle Management Workstation. TAURUS is essentially the small, slim, portable back office for ORION. Updates can also be controlled here.

Perhaps even more important, the Intel found can be analyzed and processed on TAURUS on-site and in the field. For example, in a headquarters or hideouts, maps, texts, photos, etc. can be found and “scanned” by ORION’s camera and transmitted into the system. TAURUS analyzes and processes these with the help of artificial intelligence. Texts are automatically translated, graphics and their information mapped onto maps, hazards recorded. This enables the identification of further hideouts. So far, weapons are not classified automatically as targets, but appropriate third-party plug-ins can be integrated to provide such capabilities. However, clarified IEDs or snipers will be shown and labeled accordingly. Maps and route planning are automatically adjusted based on how these threats impact the plan. Including suggestions where the enemy is most likely to be found. The artificial intelligence also works entirely offline; nothing needs to be connected or sent.

This means immediate operational insights at the tactical front. In dynamic theaters, Taurus enables reconnaissance forces and rapid autonomous terrain assessment. The 3D modeling creates photorealistic battlefield models from drone scans and thus provides immediate visual insights, foundations for situation assessment, as well as the possibility of data exchange between Orion endpoints.

Taurus enables seamless networking between the robust Orion devices. This design ensures that important information reaches all participants – for a unified and highly current situational picture and comprehensive situational awareness.

Taurus ensures success through a reliable architecture. Thanks to advanced synchronization protocols, precise tactical data, reconnaissance results and imagery are quickly distributed across the entire deployment ecosystem.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-50546 size-full lazyload ewww_webp_lazy_load" alt="3D-Karte mit farblicher Kennzeichnung von sicheren Zonen und solchen mit Feindbedrohungen. Users rapidly create detailed environmental models, which fundamentally improve spatial understanding and visual orientation, thereby enabling more effective mission execution. In addition to pure 3D modeling, automatic terrain assessments with corresponding color markings are also produced. On this basis, proposals for the best possible tactical planning are developed. For example, the squad wants to go from A to B and preferably not be exposed. Taurus indicates in percentage terms how secure the system is regarding targets and movement routes. Paths/movement lines are always categorized as “shortest,” “most tactical,” and “safest.”

Taurus is designed for operational reliability and autonomous operation and supports a robust, self-sufficient operation. Missions are unstable, threats appear and disappear, and units must stay coordinated even with strained communications. This has been especially evident in IDF operations in Gaza. Armed forces worldwide respond with accelerated development of tactical augmented reality systems. The U.S. Army IVAS program is just one example of this shift. According to Asio, the insight is that soldiers require a connected level of visual reconnaissance that accompanies and guides them constantly. However, it should not be complicated or slowed down by a cumbersome Battle Management System (BMS) that is attached.

The Lynx Tactical AR Monocular was developed precisely for this need and provides soldiers with an immediate, integrated situational picture instead of a patchwork of unconnected tools. And it is intended exclusively for the tactical level up to brigade-sized formations.

In this context, situational awareness is not an improvement but the foundation for mission success. When digital overlays, real-time data and 3D terrain information merge into a single, intuitive visual layer, the soldier gains an immediate operational advantage. No more switching between screens, maps and devices under pressure. Only clarity, speed, and safety on the battlefield.

According to Asio, Lynx is the lightest multispectral AR monocular in the world. One of the biggest obstacles to body-worn technology adoption by soldiers is weight. If the device is not mounted on the vest, it is too heavy and thus almost useless. A device may offer powerful features, but if it slows the user down or restricts mobility, it becomes a burden rather than an advantage.

Lynx is intended to solve this problem. At only around 600 grams, it is a very light military augmented reality monocular. It fuses a daylight channel with a thermal imaging channel and an integrated laser rangefinder.

All of this in a compact chest- or hip-mounted AR device, designed for mobile units that rely on agility and speed. This ratio of weight to capability is crucial for combat operations, according to Asio. The system’s high-quality thermal imaging channel delivers exceptional image clarity and thus the best possible thermal performance for a device of this size. This enables effective combat even in total darkness. Geodata is mapped directly into reality. Also in regions where GPS is not available.

Every soldier knows the challenge of switching back and forth between map and real world. It requires focus and valuable time, and in the heat of battle every second counts. Lynx eliminates this necessity. By integrating geodata, mission layers, C2 information, as well as 2D- and 3D-terrain visualization directly into the soldier’s field of view, Lynx brings the map to life. Soldiers instantly perceive their own position, important reference and route points, enemy positions, allied units, as well as obstacles and danger zones through AR.

This is real-time situational awareness that does not rely on interpretation but on immediate visual clarity. Lynx can be used as a standalone observation system or with full AR functionality within a broader ecosystem for mission optimization such as the ORION system. It can be seamlessly integrated into ATAK or other digital battle management systems, enabling its incorporation into existing workflows and the provision of real-time situational pictures across platforms. But it can also replace or complement ATAK. Unlike ATAK, it brings all the capabilities for on-site analysis, terrain visibility and verifiability. What does the terrain look like, elevations, routes, widths, sightlines, etc.? The user can simply mark enemy areas with a finger – on a map or aerial image – and position tactical symbols with line-of-sight orientation. A full 3D view is possible.

Precise Positioning under All Conditions

Lynx optimizes navigation, especially in urban environments, under dense tree canopies, and in the presence of interference and jamming. Lynx counters this with several internal sensors that stabilize orientation and position even when external signals degrade. Whether in GPS-poor areas or in dense terrain, soldiers maintain a clear sense of direction and position. This is essential for navigation in military operations where every meter and every degree of orientation counts.

Most digital situational pictures flatten the environment. Asio intends to revolutionize 3D visibility to improve terrain understanding with its system.

At Asio, Lynx is complemented by ORION, a Mission Enhancement System and a complete Soldier Suite for ground control at the tactical edge. ORION creates a unified digital operation framework that synchronizes mission data, targets, routes, and boundaries in a structured environment to ensure maneuver elements operate on the same operational reality. This includes unified target designation, standardized tactical symbology, aligned coordinates and boundary formats, shared mission overlays, and a synchronized common operating picture.

When these elements are aligned, ambiguity decreases and decision-making accelerates. Each participant interprets the battlefield through the same structured lens.

One of the most striking effects of a unified framework is the compression of the sensor-to-shooter cycle.

While Orion provides the structured digital backbone at the command and maneuver level, Lynx delivers the same operating language directly to the mounted operator. As an enhancement of situational awareness, Lynx presents georeferenced mission data, targets, allied positions and boundaries within the operator’s line of sight through tactical augmented reality. Orion expands the mission framework. Lynx improves situational clarity. Together they convert coordination into synchronized execution and enable ground troops to maintain their edge at the tactical forefront.

It is a rugged sensor for robust, visual positioning, primarily for airborne platforms. According to Asio, this has already proven its combat-worthiness. The deployment on the IDF was not publicly confirmed. In essence, Nocta is Lynx adapted for integration into unmanned platforms, offering the same capabilities. It can be deployed from tactical platforms at heights up to 1 km or at corresponding ranges. It contributes to safety in aerial reconnaissance.

Nocta provides data across all terrain types and even in the most demanding environments. The sensor can be used on a variety of platforms, though it is optimized for UAS. Its compactness and light weight enable easy integration and do not further constrain payload and flight time for smaller tactical UAVs.

Nocta ensures robust navigation for missions even without GPS, and thus maintains mission capability in GPS-denied and spoofed environments.

This robust, GPS-independent visual inertial positioning solution enables drift-free positioning in environments where GNSS is not available and preserves mission integrity when conventional systems are compromised, according to Asio. For use on Group 1–2 tactical UAVs, Nocta was designed from the outset as a Low-SWaP design. It is a fully integrated solution. As a standalone, easily integrable secondary GPS module, Nocta can be employed on various platforms, from tactical UAS to complex manned aircraft, including helicopters.

With Nocta, UAVs can also perform 3D mapping of the mission segment. Processing and presentation occur immediately and in the field as well. The ground force has instant access to the 3D view on their smart device. This enables decision-making from a protected position and enables identification of approaches. The high-resolution 3D image allows elevations and widths, obstacles and many other important information to be recognized and assessed from all vantage points. For example, can I pass my assault vehicle through an obstacle? Can the obstacle be cleared, etc.? Danger points and lines of sight can also be estimated. Can the enemy see me on this approach and engage directly?

Steilfeuer wieder in der Hand des taktischen Führers

With Needle, Asio aims to bring indirect fire back to the tactical level. Today, company commanders or battalion commanders often have to request mortar fire through the Joint Fire Support Coordination Group. They no longer have it fully in their own control.

With Needle, Asio relies on a kind of Precision Guidance Kit for mortar rounds. This gives the battalion commander back his own indirect-fire capability. There is no need to consult or assign someone else. The mortar rounds are delivered by the battalion’s UAVs. They essentially function like loitering munitions, but after release the rounds glide to the target — in effect like a wingsuit — rather than the drone delivering the munition itself. Thanks to the payload, Needle has the same effect as an integrated mortar round. Asio has not disclosed too much yet. However, the kit will be cheaply produced via a simple 3D printer. This can be produced by the unit itself in the field. The UAV release occurs at 500 to 600 meters altitude, while the mortar’s impact then occurs with high precision.

Author: Andre Forkert, Editor, Armed Forces

[1
1261,252,200,1263,1262,397
post-1817","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-augmented","tag-forces","tag-infantry","tag-monocular","tag-reality","tag-tactical","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33","resize-featured-image
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
