The first units arrived within two months of the contract award, valued at $106 million, according to the company\u2019s latest announcement.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>C-UAS VAMPIRE for the U.S. Army<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The VAMPIRE system from L3Harris is a standalone weapons solution that provides advanced reconnaissance capabilities as well as precise strikes against drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles. The armed forces are already using the technology extensively in combat operations in Europe and Ukraine. Since 2023, more than 350,000 hours of operation have been recorded, according to L3Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom day one, our team closely collaborated with the Army to make the VAMPIRE systems quickly operational,\u201d said Chris Aebli, president of the Communications &amp; Spectrum Dominance sector at L3Harris. \u201cThe U.S. armed forces are now able to reliably protect their personnel and critical assets against drone threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, L3Harris established a new production facility in Huntsville, Alabama, specifically dedicated to VAMPIRE. This responds to the growing domestic and global demand for drone-defense systems and expands VAMPIRE system manufacturing at this site.<\/p>\n<p>The L3Harris VAMPIRE system is a modular, self-contained weapons solution that enables advanced reconnaissance as well as precise strikes against drones and other unmanned aircraft. It can be pallet-mounted or flexibly integrated into light 4\u00d74 mobility platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this configuration, rapid assembly is possible. The system can be installed on standard flatbed trucks or military vehicles by two people in about two hours, according to the manufacturer. For target acquisition, the system uses the WESCAM MX-10D or MX-15D EO\/IR target gimbals along with AI-assisted tracking. Both gimbals are already in use with the German Armed Forces. The MX-15D is used primarily on aircraft such as the Airbus H145M LUH SOF and H145M LKH SOF as well as the Boeing P-8A Poseidon. The MX-10D will be part of AGF-2 (Reconnaissance and Battle Vehicle 2) of the Special Operations Command (KSK).<\/p>\n<p>An optional multi-mission radar expands VAMPIRE\u2019s reach. It enables early warning, precise target designation, and faster engagement of evolving air threats in contested operating environments, according to the manufacturer. In addition, an optional integrated electronic warfare capability adds non-kinetic abilities to VAMPIRE, allowing detection, disruption, and neutralization of radio-controlled threats in contested environments. Thus the CORVUS-RAVEN sensor also serves as self-protection.<\/p>\n<p>As the effector, a four-shot launcher for 70-mm laser-guided missiles (such as APKWS \/ FZ275) with proximity fuzes is used. The stated range is up to 6 kilometers. The system uses Widow Missions Management Software, FAADC2-compliant, as its guidance software.<\/p>\n<p>For communications integration, Link 16 radios and Falcon IV AN\/PRC-167 multi-channel radios can be used.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer has expanded the modular system into several variants. It has been developed for land (Stalker), maritime applications (Black Wake), as well as containerized solutions (CASKET) and electronic warfare. In addition, Shield AI\u2019s Tracker C-UAS technology has been integrated. Since March 2026, high-volume production has been underway at a new manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama (USA). In addition to the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy will also receive systems for integrated drone defense.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">For military use, the key advantage of the concept lies in the combination of mobility, modular sensing, and different effectors. Rather than requiring its own vehicle platform, VAMPIRE can be integrated onto existing carriers. This simplifies adaptation to different mission tasks and can limit logistic overhead. However, the crucial factor remains its integration into an overarching air defense: only in coordination with other sensors and command-and-control systems can it enable coordinated target designation and prevent multiple defense systems from engaging the same threat.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of kinetic and electronic means also opens the possibility of choosing different countermeasures depending on target type and mission context. Compared with mass-produced, relatively inexpensive drones, ammunition stock, reload times, and cost per engagement remain important factors. The four-shot launcher initially limits the immediately available number of missiles. For longer-lasting protection, a secured ammunition supply and additional defense systems are therefore required.
