As a spokesman for the German Army explained to the author, both the Virtus from Stark and the HX-2 from Helsing will be deployed. Company representatives will also be on site to capture feedback directly.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Freedom Shield in Lithuania<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At the center of the exercise &#8220;Freedom Shield&#8221; for the Bundeswehr is the further readiness of Armored Brigade 45 and the integration of new capabilities into the battle network of connected weapons. These include in particular drones and electronic warfare, whose importance has significantly increased due to experiences from the war in Ukraine. For the exercise, Panzergrenadier Battalion 122 from Oberviechtach will be deployed to Lithuania. It will be reinforced by forces from Panzerbataillon 203 from Augustdorf. The deployment will take place by rail and sea and is thus also a preparation for the permanent stationing of both formations in Lithuania from 2027, according to the Bundeswehr statement.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the German combat troops, the multinational battlegroup Lithuania, already stationed in Rukla, and a Lithuanian company participate. In total, eight NATO member states are represented: Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Belgium, Luxembourg and Lithuania. Additional formations and units of the Bundeswehr also join.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise culminates in a six-day combat drill at the Rudyninkai training area. There, according to the German Army, emphasis will be placed on the integration of unmanned systems and electronic warfare among the different arms, training their interoperation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>New Loitering Munitions for Brigade Lithuania<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The real standout feature of this year&#8217;s exercise lies in the first trial of the new loitering munition. Regarding the systems: Already in February 2026, the Bundestag&#8217;s Budget Committee approved the procurement of loitering munitions from the companies STARK and Helsing. The BAAINBw subsequently concluded corresponding framework contracts. In the first call-up, STARK is to deliver 2,200 Virtus-type systems valued at around 270 million euros. Helsing received a contract for 4,300 HX-2 systems with a comparable contract value. Both systems will now be deployed in the Freedom Shield exercise, according to information provided to ES&amp;T. Later, by the way, there was also a third order for the FV-014 loitering munition from Rheinmetall, but their systems will not be deployed in Lithuania.<\/p>\n<p>The Panzerbrigade 45 thus belongs to the first major formations of the Bundeswehr to be equipped with these new capabilities\u2014after all, it is also the closest to the potential front. From 2027, it is to have an intelligence and effects network in which unmanned systems can be used for both reconnaissance and the strike against enemy targets.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Virtus by STARK<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>STARK&#8217;s Virtus is an electrically powered loitering munition that, thanks to its VTOL capability (Vertical Take-off and Landing), can take off and land vertically, meaning no additional launching device such as a catapult is required. Since Virtus can also land again, the drone can be reused multiple times and does not require special capture devices.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 696px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-50696-1\" width=\"696\" height=\"290\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/soldat-und-technik.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/f72e4332a995c49fa90252ac96ded5a4838459a0.mp4?_=1\"><\/source>\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/f72e4332a995c49fa90252ac96ded5a4838459a0.mp4<\/video><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Virtus loitering munition by Stark. (Video: Stark)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the manufacturer, Virtus has a range of more than 130 kilometers and a flight time of up to 90 minutes. Its cruising speed is over 120 km\/h; in attack flight, the system can reach more than 250 km\/h. Operational altitude is up to 2,000 meters. The modular payload weighs up to five kilograms. The system is intended to be ready for use in less than ten minutes. In the basic configuration, the warhead can penetrate more than 800 millimeters of armor steel. Alternatively, fragmentation warheads can be integrated to engage unarmored targets.<\/p>\n<p>For navigation and target engagement, Stark relies on artificial intelligence. This enables the identification, classification, and tracking of targets. For navigation without satellite signals, Virtus includes, among other things, visual recognition as well as the ability to determine its position by matching with satellite imagery and known terrain features. Through the command software Minerva, several Virtus systems can also be coordinated and linked with reconnaissance drones. A multilayer data link is intended to increase resilience against electronic interference.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HX-2 by Helsing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The HX-2 from Helsing is also an electrically powered loitering munition with a distinctive X-shaped wing arrangement. The twelve-kilogram drone achieves a range of up to 100 kilometers and a top speed of 220 km\/h, according to the manufacturer. HX-2 was developed to counter artillery systems, armored vehicles, and other military targets. For this purpose, there are different warhead variants available, including armor-piercing and multi-purpose warheads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"BZC8XuRqDHQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Helsing HX-2 Field Testing\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BZC8XuRqDHQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A focus of its development was resilience against electronic warfare, according to the manufacturer. With the help of integrated artificial intelligence, HX-2 should be able to search for, re-identify, and engage targets even when no satellite navigation signal or continuous data link is available.<\/p>\n<p>Through the reconnaissance and control software Altra, multiple HX-2 can be deployed together and networked with reconnaissance drones, artillery systems, and existing combat management software. Helsing describes the system as swarm-capable. In addition, software updates can be transmitted wirelessly to adapt HX-2 to new threats and procedures of use. The loitering munition is explicitly designed for industrial mass production and is already manufactured in Germany.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tested in Ukraine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Both systems \u2013 Virtus and HX-2 \u2013 have also been tested in Ukraine and have undergone various upgrades. The Bundeswehr or the German Army is thus not testing prototypes, but loitering munitions adapted on the basis of frontline experiences of Ukrainian soldiers. And the feedback from German female soldiers can also be directly incorporated, as both companies have representatives on site. Furthermore, the Inspector of the Army and soon the General Inspector of the Bundeswehr, Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, will visit Lithuania to get a picture of the new systems and their effectiveness and integration.
