{"id":878,"date":"2026-05-09T08:33:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T12:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/draftidf.co.il\/news\/u-s-coast-guard-establishes-new-special-forces-command\/878\/"},"modified":"2026-05-09T08:33:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T12:33:19","slug":"u-s-coast-guard-establishes-new-special-forces-command","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/draftidf.co.il\/news\/u-s-coast-guard-establishes-new-special-forces-command\/878\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Coast Guard Establishes New Special Forces Command"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Coast Guard will establish a new Special Missions Command at its C5I Service Center in Kearneysville, West Virginia, effective October 1 \u2014 ironically inland in the American heartland, quite distant from the coasts of the United States, yet in relative proximity to the headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Special Missions Command (SMC) will oversee the Deployable Specialized Forces (DSF) of the organization, which to date were split between the Atlantic and Pacific Commands.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2007 and 2013 there was already such a centralized command, the Deployable Operations Group, under the command of a Captain of the Coast Guard in Arlington, Virginia. Due to the heightened tempo of operations against drug smuggling and sanctioned ships of various \u201cshadow fleets\u201d under President Donald Trump, there is now a recognized need to return to a centralized organization. The U.S. Coast Guard is an official component of the U.S. military, but in peacetime it falls under the Department of Homeland Security (formerly under the Transportation Department) and has police and search-and-rescue duties at sea.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Special Forces of the U.S. Coast Guard<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Among the special forces that will come under the SMC are the Maritime Security Response Teams, Tactical Law Enforcement Teams, and Maritime Safety and Security Teams. The first two carry out boarding operations in particular, with the Tactical Law Enforcement Teams especially focusing on operations against drug traffickers and other serious criminals. The Maritime Safety and Security Teams are rapidly deployable by boat to secure ports and other maritime infrastructure or to respond to terrorist attacks and sabotage.<\/p>\n<p>For the ongoing protection of such facilities, the Coast Guard\u2019s Port Security Units are employed. The three Regional Dive Lockers are the home of Coast Guard divers for security, but also repair and maintenance underwater missions, even in Arctic regions. Finally, there is the National Strike Force, the technically most specialized, with three teams for complex crises and natural disasters such as oil spills and other hazardous-material incidents, including those involving chemical, biological, and nuclear or radiological substances.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard\u2019s special forces also support other agencies within the Homeland Security and Defense departments in maritime situations. They aided in the hunt for a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker from the Caribbean to the Atlantic earlier this year and in the recent seizure of Iranian blockade runners in the Indian Ocean.
