Already a few weeks ago, various sources reported that the attacked country has now surpassed the aggressor in the quantity of long-range drone strikes. In particular, the campaign against Russia&#8217;s oil and gas infrastructure is showing increasing impact. Beyond this target category, drone attacks can be expected at any time within a geographic area extending to the Moscow region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48638\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48638\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><noscript><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48638\" src=\"https:\/\/draftidf.co.il\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Ukraine-War-Strategic-Shift-and-Operational-Impacts.jpg\" alt=\"Situation im Ukrainekrieg am 26.05.2026, 21:00 MESZ.\" width=\"696\" height=\"404\" title=\"Ukrainekrieg: Strategische Verschiebung, operative Auswirkungen 2\"   data-eio=\"l\"><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<p>Recently, several sources, including Russian military bloggers, have particularly pointed out that the increase in Ukrainian drone attacks at medium range\u2014up to about 250 kilometers behind the front line\u2014seriously impairs Russia&#8217;s logistics for its front-line troops. This area encompasses the entire land corridor to the occupied Crimea. Ukraine initially targeted enemy air-defense systems in particular. Nowadays, every supply convoy along road connections west of Donetsk Oblast is a potential target.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Russian Territorial Losses in Zaporizhzhia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>First effects may be visible at the western end of the immediate front in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Here, Russian troops east of the former Kakhovka Reservoir\u2014since the dam&#8217;s destruction three years ago a swampy no-man&#8217;s-land\u2014had managed to gain some ground since the end of last year. In recent weeks, however, they have lost larger parts of it again. Thus Ukraine was able to bring the long-contested town of Prymorske under its control, located right at the edge of the swamp area, and recently also reported the capture of the southward Stepnohirsk.<\/p>\n<p>Russian sources describe the latter as still contested, but already fear the loss of further settlements along the southern front. With increasing proximity to the Donbas and correspondingly shorter supply lines, Russia seems to hold its positions better or to stay proactive. Thus, in the area of the recent Ukrainian counteroffensive in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, it reported its own advance of nearly ten kilometers depth to the outskirts of the town of Pokrowske and the capture of two additional settlements along the Russia-Ukraine state border in the northeastern Sumy Oblast.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Drones Are Increasingly Dominating the Ukraine War<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This, in turn, is not confirmed by Ukraine. Also, last week a report of a similar advance on the eastern front toward the Oskil River in Kharkiv Oblast proved false and was supported by images from towns behind the Russian front. Thus, the situational picture is further plagued by polished front reports, especially from the Russian side. Overall, the exact course of the front remains unclear due to other known factors such as increasingly unmanned warfare with relatively few human \u201cboots on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russian sources show increasingly fewer shifts in territorial possession than the dominance of one side within the drone-dominated \u201cgray zone.\u201d The trend of Ukrainian superiority in the drone domain thus becomes a serious problem for Russia at all levels. Probably not by chance did Russian propaganda outlets extensively label a drone attack on a pedagogical university in Starobilsk in Luhansk Oblast, in which reportedly up to 21 students in a dormitory died, as a \u201cwar crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine, by contrast, spoke of a strike against a military headquarters. Russia responded with renewed heavy attacks on the Kyiv region, including the third deployment of a ballistic medium-range missile of the Oreschnik type. Russian military bloggers, who did not attach extraordinary significance to the school attack itself, criticized this as an expensive distraction from the front situation.
