Norway and the Finnish defense company Patria have, within the framework of the multinational CAVS program, signed an agreement for the delivery of 20 command vehicles with remotely operated weapon stations Kongsberg Protector RS4. The order also includes an option for a further 40 vehicles. Deliveries are to begin later this year, Patria announced on Monday.
Norway had in May signed the framework agreement for the CAVS series procurement. Last year the country joined the program together with the United Kingdom as the sixth and seventh members to participate in the 6×6 armored transport vehicle program. The vehicle, branded Patria XA-300, has been developed since 2019 jointly by Finland and Latvia, since 2021 also by Sweden and since 2023 by Germany. The original project member Estonia withdrew again in the meantime, while Denmark is set to join in 2025.
Up to 2,900 CAVS ordered, 300 already delivered
Germany had last year placed procurement orders for up to 876 CAVS. In total, the Bundeswehr has a need for 4,000 vehicles as a successor to the Fuchs armored transport vehicle. This would make it, by a wide margin, the largest user within the CAVS program. Lithuania has ordered 936, Sweden 435, Latvia 256, Finland 165 and Denmark 130. Ukraine has also procured 42 units. The Norwegian order brings the total, including options, to 2,900. In February 2026, Patria reported that 300 vehicles had already been delivered.
CAVS is based on the successful Patria AMV and is a three-axle amphibious armored fighting vehicle with a curb weight of 15.5 tonnes and a permissible gross weight of 24 tonnes. The basic protection corresponds to STANAG 4569 Level 2 and can be upgraded to Level 4 (against armor-piercing ammunition of 14.5 mm). The vehicle carries a crew of two to three and eight to ten passengers. It is powered by a Scania AB diesel engine delivering 294 kW (394 hp). The speed exceeds 100 km/h on roads and 8 km/h in water, with a maximum range of more than 700 kilometers.
