The Finnish armed forces have agreed with the defense contractor Patria on the serial procurement of more than 100 mobile TREMOS mortar systems. According to a Patria press release dated September 8, the agreement also includes an option for several hundred more units.
The delivery will begin later this year and is to be completed by 2028. After trials of a pre-series in 2025, this contract represents an important milestone for the Finnish defense company and, according to the company, simultaneously strengthens national supply security as well as domestic defense capability. Production will take place in Finland, involving numerous local suppliers, which is estimated to secure around 130 person-years of employment.
TREMOS mortar system for the modern battlefield
Patria’s TREMOS is an innovative, mobile development of traditional mortar systems, specifically tailored to the requirements of modern warfare. The system relies on advanced recoil technology that makes anchoring to the ground unnecessary, Patria writes. This allows the system to be flexibly integrated with a wide range of carrier vehicles such as 4×4, 6×6, or 8×8 wheeled vehicles as well as light tracked vehicles.
A key economic and logistical advantage lies in the fact that existing mortar tubes, tube floors, ammunition types, and ballistic tables can be reused. This significantly simplifies training, operation, and logistics.
Shoot-and-Scoot with TREMOS
Technologically, the system offers a pronounced capability for rapid repositioning (shoot-and-scoot), maximizing crew survivability. From patrol mode, the mortar system can be ready to fire within 60 seconds; from a known position, this time is reduced to just 30 seconds. Immediately after the last shot, the position can be left at once. Cutting-edge equipment such as integrated inertial navigation systems (INU) and connections to battlefield management systems (BMS) ensure high accuracy from the first shot under all weather conditions.
The modular system requires only a three-person crew and combines high firepower with maximum tactical mobility.
