The medical care of wounded soldiers, both women and men, is the core mission of the Bundeswehr’s Medical Service. The President of the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), Annette Lehnigk-Emden, accordingly commissioned on July 13, 2026 the supplier Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH (RhPS) to supply 149 additional mobile rescue stations.
This constitutes a sub-project of the overall program Modular Medical Facilities (MSE). The MSE are container-based, mobile treatment facilities. They will play a key role in ensuring that wounded soldiers receive the medical care they need throughout the entire evacuation chain.
Rescue Stations for NATO Treatment Level 1
The newly ordered rescue stations are part of the MSE and implement NATO Treatment Level 1. This level follows directly after self- and buddy-aid and focuses on emergency medical care. Specifically, it means maintaining and securing vital functions as well as preparation or stabilization for further transport.
In addition, there is the possibility to perform initial emergency surgical procedures, such as surgical wound treatment. Thus, the new stations will be the first point of contact for wounded soldiers. The acute care provided there is crucial for saving lives, as demonstrated by the current war in Ukraine.
Call-off under the 2024 Framework Contract
Each mobile rescue station consists of two containers, a connecting element, and the transport component required for it. All necessary medical equipment is carried within the rescue station. Therefore the rescue station, together with its personnel, can be transported, assembled, operated, dismantled and moved to the next deployment location in the shortest possible time. Thus, the medical service can follow the fighting troops directly.
The new order is a call-off under the framework contract closed in 2024 between the BAAINBw and the RhPS company. At contract signing, 16 rescue stations were already firmly commissioned. Now the call-off for a further 149 rescue stations has been approved. 112 of these stations are ballistic – i.e., protected against small-arms fire and splinter effects.
The new call-off is a milestone in the regeneration of the Bundeswehr’s rescue stations. The stations currently in operation were procured in the early 2000s. They will gradually be replaced by the new stations by the end of 2029. The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag had approved the framework contract call-off on July 8, 2026.
