On Monday this week, around 1,600 recruits in Denmark began the basic military service, expanded from four to eleven months. Among them, for the first time about 20 percent were women under the kingdom’s compulsory service obligation. Princess Isabella was also among the participants as the first female member of the royal family. Like her older brother Crown Prince Christian did last year, she will serve with the Guard Hussars in Slagelse without military pay.
Normally, the basic military service is compensated with roughly €34,000 in military pay and a subsistence allowance. In August Denmark aims in another premiere to relocate a company of conscripts for a one-month rotation to Greenland. The country had intensified its military presence in the autonomous territory due to the ownership claims raised by U.S. President Donald Trump.
