The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) have commissioned the Finnish communications specialist KNL to deliver further Cognitive Networked HF (CNHF) radio systems. The contract value amounts to around €6.5 million. Delivery is set to begin immediately after signing. With the contract, the forces continue to expand the deployment of software-defined high-frequency radio systems (HF).
CNHF technology enables fail-safe communications over long distances without reliance on satellite navigation (GNSS) or other external infrastructure. The systems are designed for stationary facilities, vehicles and dismounted troops alike and feature a unified user interface as well as a common waveform. This is intended to simplify interoperability, training and logistical processes.
First CNHF Radio Device Order from KNL in August 2025
KNL managing director Toni Lindén described the order as a sign of the Finnish Defence Forces’ confidence in the company’s technology. At the same time, the order underscores the shared goal of delivering resilient communications capabilities and strengthening Nordic defense cooperation. It is already the third contract awarded to KNL by the Finnish Defence Forces within a year.
In August 2025, the Finnish Defence Forces together with Sweden’s procurement authority FMV ordered CNHF manpack radios for the first time, valued at €15 million. In November 2025, a further order for around €2 million followed for additional radios, software and maintenance services. KNL, based in Oulu, Finland, is part of the Norwegian Telenor Group.
