Poland Prepares Coalition Exercise for Ukraine Mission

As part of plans for a “Coalition of the Willing” for a possible military mission in Ukraine after the end of Russia’s invasion, an exercise is to be held in Poland this autumn. The immediate neighbor of Ukraine belongs, alongside the framework nations France and the United Kingdom as well as numerous other NATO members including Germany, to the informal coalition for shaping a postwar order, but has so far stressed its role as a hub for logistics and infrastructure for a Multinational Force Ukraine (MNF-U).

According to the Polish Ministry of Defense, the exercise is intended primarily to test leadership structures, logistical provisioning, and the deployment of troops. In this way, the participating nations aimed to achieve a higher degree of coordination and to confirm the mission’s readiness before the Ukraine war ends. Currently, negotiations are underway about the involvement of additional armed forces beyond those of France and the United Kingdom. From Germany, which at times also served as co-chair of the coalition, there are so far no clear statements about military contributions.
