US III Armored Corps Under Western Hemisphere Command

The U.S. Army has assigned its III Armored Corps to the newly created Western Hemisphere Command, headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, established in December. This unites the former headquarters U.S. Army North (ARNORTH), U.S. Army South (ARSOUTH) and Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), which will be dissolved by October 15, 2026. As part of the reorganization, the III Corps was initially moved from FORSCOM to U.S. Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF).

The current reassignment is accompanied by the presumed downgrading of USAREUR-AF to a three-star command. At least, the promotion of Lieutenant General Kevin Admiral, who has been nominated as the successor to the recently dismissed four-star General Christopher Donahue for unclear reasons, is not currently planned. This would also reflect the prioritization of defending U.S. territory and the Western Hemisphere in the new National Security Strategy (NSS) of President Donald Trump’s administration.
