Rheinmetall Establishes a Competence Center for Autonomous Systems

Rheinmetall has opened a new competence centre for Advanced Land Autonomy (Advanced Land Autonomy Centre of Excellence, ALACOE) in the United Kingdom, the company announced on Friday. The initiative is part of a broader network of centers intended to establish autonomy locally in Europe, in the United States and in Australia. At the core is Rheinmetall PATH technology – the AI-powered autonomy kit from Rheinmetall Canada.

PATH was developed in Canada and, according to the company, enables perception, navigation and decision-making in complex, GPS-denied and contested environments. PATH is platform-agnostic and has already been demonstrated on more than 40 wheeled and tracked vehicles. It enables autonomous navigation, convoy operations in leader-follower mode, and dynamic obstacle avoidance in dense terrain, coastal areas and harsh climates.

Rheinmetall to strengthen NATO operational readiness

Its readiness has been validated through demanding multinational tests and competitions, including NATO-related experiments and the European Land Robot Trials (ELROB). In these tests, PATH-enabled Rheinmetall systems achieved top performance in automated convoy operations, thereby proving their deployment readiness.

As many countries bolster their defence readiness and modernize their forces, the new network of centers underscores Canada’s leading role in autonomous ground systems in Europe, according to Rheinmetall. ALACOE UK will serve the local market on site and make leading technologies in ground autonomy directly available for the British market as well as the region. This could contribute to strengthening the NATO member states’ collective security.

Significant industrial and economic benefits for future missions

As part of ALACOE, Rheinmetall says it actively integrates UK-based companies into its supply chain to anchor advanced technologies locally. Acting as a hub for integrating, testing and deploying autonomous ground systems, ALACOE strengthens British sovereignty. At the same time, high-quality jobs in engineering and the technology sector would be created in the United Kingdom, while advanced manufacturing in Canada would be safeguarded.
