The U.S. Army has awarded BAE Systems a contract modification valued at $818 million (€720 million) for the delivery of additional Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles (AMPV). The potential total value of the original contract from March 2023 thus rises to $3.3 billion (€2.9 billion). The number of additional vehicles was not disclosed, but they are scheduled for delivery by March 31, 2030.
The AMPV is based on the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle and is intended to replace a total of 2,897 M113 armored transports in the Army. It plans to procure 993 M1286 command and control vehicles, 790 M1284 casualty-evacuation vehicles, and 216 M1285 medical treatment vehicles, as well as 522 M1283 multi-purpose transports and 386 M1287 mortar carriers. The first vehicles were delivered in 2023, and between 2024 and 2027 BAE Systems planned to produce 131 units annually thereafter.
The Army Already Has Vehicles from Previous Orders
The original contract value was $797 million (€701 million) with an option for a total of $1.6 billion (€1.4 billion). In March 2024 followed a follow-on expansion of $754.3 million (€663.8 million). By January 2025, an estimated 390 armored transports including command and medical vehicles as well as 50 mortar carriers from previous contracts had already been delivered for the initial Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) starting in 2019.
Compared with the original Bradley infantry fighting vehicle, the AMPV features the removal of the two-man turret, a raised hull roof, enhanced protection, redesigned propulsion, and the integration of a new electronic architecture. The interior volume increased by 78 percent versus its predecessor. It is powered by a Cummins diesel engine delivering 685 horsepower, which drives the 36-ton vehicle through a Renk transmission to a top speed of 61 km/h. The range is approximately 360 kilometers.
