Artillery Battalion 215 Activates 1st, 4th and 5th Batteries

One year after its reorganization, the Artillery Battalion 215 of Panzerbrigade 21 “Lipperland” has grown noticeably. In a ceremonial parade at Augustdorf, Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Fabian Kolbe established three new batteries yesterday. The units take on central tasks in leadership and supply, in building the capability for loitering munitions, and in training the military’s next generation. Even the new training battery alone will, in the future, be able to train up to 300 recruits simultaneously.

“A functional unit does not arise from a drawn-up directive. It arises from people, camaraderie, and the will to take responsibility. Today I see many comrades who have taken new paths to reach this milestone,” explains Lieutenant Colonel Fabian Kolbe and at the same time thanks his establishing staff for the work done over the past year. “With the three new batteries, we are now taking the next decisive step in the development of our battalion.”

1st Battery – A Guarantee of Endurance and Leadership Capability

The three new batteries take on completely different areas of responsibility. With the establishment of the 1st Battery, Artillery Battalion 215 gains its organic unit for emission and leadership support. Its soldiers create essential prerequisites that allow the battalion staff to lead and the batteries to fulfill their mission.

These responsibilities include, in particular, supply and transport as well as the setup and operation of the unit’s IT and radio communications. In combat, the battery ensures that personnel, materiel, and supply goods are available where they are needed. It forms the logistical and organizational backbone of the battalion and makes a decisive contribution to maintaining its operational readiness.

4th Battery – New Capabilities for the Artillery

With the 4th Battery, Artillery Battalion 215 assumes an essential task for Panzerbrigade 21. The battery will become the bearer of the national capability buildup for loitering munitions. These systems combine the characteristics of unmanned aircraft with those of a precision weapon: they can be deployed over long distances, search for a suitable target in the area of operations, and strike it precisely. The Bundeswehr is currently building up this capability, drawing on insights from current conflicts as well as the experiences of the troops from testing.

Artillery Battalion 215 is planned to be among the first formations to establish an reconnaissance and effects network with such systems. In the longer term, these innovative unmanned effectors will complement classic tube artillery and broaden the possibilities for long-range and precise target reconnaissance and subsequent engagement—robust and redundant. For the newly formed 4th Battery, this primarily means pioneering work: personnel must be trained, procedures must be developed, and new systems must be integrated into the artillery’s combat leadership.

5th Battery – A Mammoth Task: 300 Recruits

The fifth battery will, in the future, at the Augustdorf site be another unit that offers basic training. Beginning in October, up to 300 recruits will simultaneously spend their first months with the Bundeswehr there. This significantly increases Augustdorf’s training capacity: previously, at the entire site, around 200 recruits per quarter could begin their training in Augustdorf.

Now 300 recruits will join in October. For this task, the prospective instructors have been training standardized training standards for more than a month so that training can begin on October 1 as planned. “For this battery: establishment today, tomorrow 300 recruits,” explains Commander Kolbe.

Artillery Battalion 215 continues Augustdorf tradition

In basic training, the aspiring soldiers learn the military basics. These include, among other things, weapons and marksmanship training, combat service, medical training, defense against life-threatening substances and hazards, guard duty, and the improvement of physical performance. Political education and the principles of Internal Leadership are also part of the training.

Artillery Battalion 215 is the first artillery unit of the German Army to be equipped with modern radar-guided howitzers and loitering munitions. The radar-based weapon systems complement Panzerbrigade 21 “Lipperland” as a brigade of the medium forces by adding a long-range element of indirect fire support—while maintaining high mobility and protection. The designation “215” continues the tradition of the former Panzerartilleriebataillon 215, which was stationed in Augustdorf from 1958 to 2015. In the spirit of tradition, the number and crest will be continued.
