At the defense exhibition MSPO 2026 in Kielce, Poland, the Singaporean ST Engineering was also represented last week with numerous products. The Asian company is already present on the European market with its articulated-tracked vehicle Bronco All Terrain Tracked Carrier (ATTC): in Finland it is offered by Sisu with domestic equipment as GTT. Britain deployed the Bronco 2 up to 2015 as a supplement to the BvS 10 from BAE Systems in Afghanistan. Germany, which in 2021 ordered two civilian variants of ExtremV as firefighting vehicles for the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle (WTD) 91, also procured 26 for Ukraine.
According to Gerard Chen, Vice President and Head of the Marketing Development Defence & Public Security department at ST, the company has recently developed with Austrian partners ESLAIT and Empl an alpine version of the current Bronco 3 for a need of the Bundesheer, which shows interest in expanding its existing fleet of 32 BvS 10. Their drivetrain was specially adapted to mountain and snow conditions; added are a fold-down remotely operated weapon station from ESLAIT, mounts for the Sturmgewehr 77 (Steyr AUG), the possibility to fit with a snowplow, and further details such as new door locks.
Bronco 3 with Increased Gross Weight and More Protection
Protection uses ST’s CleaArmour technology for the windows for the first time. As with the Finnish GTT, which could replace or supplement the Bv 206 and 308 procured from Sweden and Norway, the Bronco developed for the soft soils of the Malay Peninsula around Singapore thus becomes a multi-terrain vehicle that competes with the Bv-series originally developed by Hägglunds for domestic European terrain. According to Gerard Chen, the collaboration with local partners, including comprehensive technology transfer, is ST’s model.
The Bronco 3 has a maximum gross weight increased from 16 to 21 tons compared with the original version and is powered by a Mercedes-MTU TD106 diesel with 325 hp and higher torque. The weight gain benefits protection, which now also includes a V-shaped floor for both modules and one meter higher ground clearance of the rear passenger module against mines. In addition, the cabin height has been increased to create more volume. In total the Bronco can accommodate six people in the front module and a further ten in the rear module.
Terrex s5 HED: Digital “Living Room” on the Battlefield
In addition, the company hopes to attract customers for its armored 8×8 Terrex wheeled vehicle on the relatively crowded European market here. A key selling point for the current s5 HED version is its comprehensive digital architecture with a hybrid-electric drive. By placing the 1,200-horsepower drive motor at the front, the lithium-ion batteries under the cabin floor, and the crewless turret without through-roof breach on the roof, the vehicle in the wheeled armored variant presented at the MSPO appeared from the inside as a tidy “living room” for twelve men with a panorama screen cockpit at the front end.
This impression is also aided by the commander’s position at the front right next to the driver’s seat, equipped with a relatively conventional steering wheel. ST states that it consciously looked to models from the computer-game sector, which is reflected, among other things, in the game-console-like controller of the commander. This allows him, in addition to steering the weapon turret, to take control of the entire vehicle from the driver, whereas the reverse currently does not work. And while visibility and operation via screens and touchscreens still rely on conventional backups such as angled mirrors, manual turret operation is not possible.
The drive-by-wire system of the Terrex s5 HED also enables manned-unmanned teaming and the remote operation of the entire vehicle. The combination of engine power and battery capacity enables on-board power supply of 50 kilowatts at 28 volts and 450 kilowatts at 700 volts DC, as well as a range of 50 kilometers using only quiet electric propulsion, and accelerates the vehicle up to 120 km/h on roads despite weighing up to 35 tons. With a combustion drive, range can reach up to 1,000 kilometers. In addition to the wheeled armored vehicle with a 30-mm turret, ST has announced five more versions, including a command vehicle.
