German-Dutch Corps Takes Over Northeast Flank

The 1st German-Dutch Corps (1GNC) has today, July 30, as announced, assumed responsibility for NATO operations in Estonia and Latvia. At a ceremony in Valga/Valka on the Estonia-Latvia border, the official handover took place by the Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE), which will remain responsible for the eastern flank in Lithuania and Poland as the operation continues. The new structure comes into force on July 1.

During the ceremony, Lieutenant General Dariusz Parylak, the Commanding General of the Multinational Corps Northeast, handed over responsibility to Lieutenant General Peter Mirow. Attendees included, among others, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgöz, and the Commander of Allied Joint Force Command, General Ingo Gerhartz.

German-Dutch Responsibility for Estonia and Latvia

“With this handover, we take on a clear responsibility for Estonia and Latvia,” said the Commanding General of the 1GNC, Lieutenant General Peter Mirow. “We will lead the forces laid out here, prepare their cooperation, and rapidly integrate reinforcements. Whoever wants to defend Estonia and Latvia must be able to lead on the ground—that is exactly what we are doing. Estonia and Latvia can rely on the alliance.”

The headquarters remains in Münster, but for exercises, planning, and leadership tasks it will be deployed more frequently in Estonia and Latvia. The handover was deliberately conducted in Valga/Valka, right on the border between Estonia and Latvia. The integrated city is called Valga on the Estonian side and Valka on the Latvian side. Despite the state border, it forms a common urban space—and thus stands for the close cooperation of both NATO states.

Geographically More Concentrated Leadership at the Corps Level

The leadership at the corps level within the alliance will be geographically more concentrated in the future. Under the German-Dutch Corps, alongside the respective national armed forces, the Canadian-led Multinational Brigade Latvia in Latvia and the British-led eFP Battle Group Estonia in Estonia will also fall under its command, which should be expanded into a brigade as well. In a crisis, reinforcement forces from alliance partners would also be added.

The Multinational Corps Northeast will continue to command, among others, the Lithuanian armed forces, the Bundeswehr’s Panzerbrigade 45 currently being formed, and reinforcement forces for Lithuania—presently Panzergrenadier Brigade 37. Germany thus assumes, in addition to these formations and its participation in MNC NE with 1GNC, further direct responsibility in the northeast of the alliance’s area.
