Protecting Bundeswehr Facilities: Net-Launcher Drones Ordered

The Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) signed a contract on October 15 for the procurement of networked drone systems (NWDS). A day earlier, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag had already given the green light for the project. Delivery of the first units is expected to begin as early as 2027. With this measure, the Bundeswehr is responding to the noticeably growing threat posed by unauthorized small and micro drones, which are increasingly used for espionage of military infrastructures or for potential sabotage attempts, the Procurement Office wrote in a statement.

According to the statement, the main advantage of the newly procured drone defense lies in its non-destructive and controlled approach. Instead of shooting down intruding aircraft, the networked interceptor drones capture them in flight with a targeted net. The captured drone is then placed at a predefined point on the ground. This procedure significantly minimizes the risk of uncontrolled debris, which is especially important when used in densely populated areas or sensitive environments. A positive side effect is that the captured aircraft remain intact for later forensic investigations.

Networked Interceptor Drones Primarily for Protecting Bundeswehr Facilities

Technically, the system relies on the interplay between ground-based reconnaissance assets and the on-board sensors of the interceptor drones to accurately detect and track targets. The actual interception always requires authorization by a human operator. Flexible deployment modes allow it to actively pursue targets or rapidly intercept incoming threats along defined defense lines. The system complements existing defensive measures and can be seamlessly integrated with detection radars or jammers. The networked interceptor drones are intended mainly to protect Bundeswehr facilities at home and abroad, at locations of allied armed forces, as well as at sensitive large-scale events and critical infrastructure.

The contractor for the project is identified in the attached images. Argus Interception will supply the drone systems of the A1-Falke type. According to available information, a framework contract for 450 systems with a value exceeding more than one billion euros has been concluded. About one-tenth of these have been firm-ordered with deliveries beginning in 2027.
