Multinational Field Hospital Tested in the Baltics

During the NATO exercise “Vigorous Warrior 2026” from May 20 to July 8, the German Bundeswehr’s Medical Service for the first time relocated, set up, and put into operation a field hospital, i.e., the Level 3 (Role 3) medical care, in the Baltic region. It is the largest modular medical care facility of the Bundeswehr, focusing on diagnostics, post-operative care, and intensive medical support.

This mobile medical facility at the Port of Tallinn was a central component of the multinational exercise, in which around 2,500 soldiers and civilian personnel from 29 NATO and partner nations participated. For the setup, 163 containers and 38 vehicles were transported from Germany to Muuga near Tallinn, Estonia. The Role 3 – comparable to a mobile district hospital – is the penultimate level of the military rescue chain.

Field Hospital Cares for Wounded in Alliance Scenarios

More than 400 soldiers as well as civilian personnel from Germany, Estonia, the Netherlands, Canada, France, Belgium, Japan, Slovenia, Croatia, Sweden, Iceland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom travelled to Estonia to practice as medical personnel themselves or to support the exercise by portraying realistically wounded patients who require care.

By operating the field hospital, the Medical Service demonstrates its ability to rapidly, effectively and multinationally care for the wounded in alliance scenarios. The rapid deployability, close cooperation with international partners, and the assurance of an unbroken medical evacuation chain are essential prerequisites for the readiness and endurance of the soldiers and also of NATO.
