Stridsvagn 123 A: KNDS Delivers First Modernized Tank

KNDS has delivered the first of a total of 110 comprehensively modernized Stridsvagn 123 A (Leopard 2 SWE) to Sweden’s Procurement Authority FMV. The modernization program, under the name REMO (Renovation Modernization), covers all Swedish Leopard 2 battle tanks and will be completed by 2030. The modernization includes an increase in combat capability, a higher level of protection and digitalization measures as well as a logistics package.

“For decades, we have had a close, friendly and trusting cooperation with Sweden, which is clearly expressed in this project. Sweden has contributed significantly to the Stridsvagn 123 A battle tank system and has been driving the development of the Leopard 2 for almost 30 years,” said Florian Hohenwarter, CEO KNDS Germany, during a ceremonial handover ceremony in Munich. “The Stridsvagn 123 A clearly belongs to the most modern combat tanks and is fully interoperable across all Leopard 2 systems in every respect.”

From Stridsvagn 122 to 123 A

FMV had commissioned the modernization of the Stridsvagn 122, which corresponds to a Leopard 2 A5 adapted to Swedish requirements, in two lots in October 2023 and January 2025. According to FMV, the upgrade includes, among other things, the replacement of virtually all electronic components in the turret so that the system aligns with other modern Leopard 2s, a new 120 mm L55A1 cannon with programmable ammunition capability, new night sights for the gunner and commander, as well as a new driver’s sight.

KNDS also cited a higher protection level, new driving and operator concepts, an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit), and further digitization measures as part of the program. With its new weapon (L55 A1), the Swedish Leopard 2 significantly increases its range and firepower. In addition, the Stridsvagn 123 A is equipped with fully digital workstations and offers the highest level of connectivity. In the autumn of 2026, the Swedish Army will begin training the first soldiers on the battle tank.
