SFC Energy AG, headquartered in Brunnthal near Munich, has, according to its own statements, won the largest contract in the company’s history and can thereby raise its forecast for 2026. SFC will deliver field-tested fuel cell systems with a value of €42.7 million to Ukraine. In doing so, under the government’s enhancement initiative, the delivery of “combat-proven” hybrid energy supply systems (fuel cells and batteries) for military and civilian deployment scenarios will be implemented.
In addition to the delivery of the systems, the establishment of local partnerships for training, service and support is also planned. The quickly deployable hybrid energy solutions are intended to provide a resilient and decentralized power supply for deployed forces as well as for critical electronic systems, including communications, navigation, and reconnaissance equipment. Depending on the deployment profile, they also serve to charge the batteries of unmanned systems, such as drones.
SFC will establish the foundations for sustainable use
Due to their low thermal and acoustic signatures, they significantly increase stealth and thus safety in the operational environment, according to the manufacturer. The systems enable continuous, low-maintenance, and low-emission power supply. Moreover, the fuel cell systems significantly reduce logistical effort. The low need for consumables reduces weight and volume compared with purely battery-powered solutions, and creates additional space for mission-critical equipment such as rations, water, and ammunition, while simultaneously extending mission duration.
In parallel with the delivery and commissioning of the systems, in coordination with the Special Staff Ukraine of the BMVg, the establishment of local structures for training, service and support as well as for regional value creation is planned. The aim is to ensure the sustainable use of the systems, to support existing and additional sub-branches of the armed forces, as well as to contribute to civilian reconstruction and to meet the demand for reliable, decentralized energy supply beyond 2026.
Military and Civilian Applications
Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy AG, said: “We thank Ukraine for the trust and are proud to be able to make a meaningful and important contribution within the framework of the federal government’s enhancement initiative. After the successful deployment of our solutions under real conditions, we support the deployed forces with field-tested, highly mobile systems. These combine high autonomy, long endurance, and an extremely low signature. This provides clear tactical advantages and at the same time increases the safety of the deployed personnel.”
Field-tested solutions would be delivered for both military users and civilian applications. The reason is the ongoing Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure and, above all, on energy supply. Among others, the SFC Emily as well as the Jenny 600 and 1200 are delivered, which are also used by the Bundeswehr and other NATO states. Other systems include the EFOY Pro, EFOY Pro Cube, EFOY H2Rack, and EFOY H2Genset.
